In Québec, when the two world wars come up, we most often refer to the words “conscription” and “deserters”. Conscription did indeed mark Québec deeply. In concrete terms, the population’s reactions and protests coloured the image of the francophone contribution to the war effort. Despite this, recent research has revealed that about 76,000 francophones fought or served in the First World War, and almost all of them were volunteers.
